Summary

The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine has engaged AMN Healthcare to conduct a national search for their next Chair, Department of Surgery. The Chair will be a collaborative and visionary leader who understands how to drive change and lead an efficient and effective Surgery Department with the highest standards of clinical outcomes and research impact in a complex and dynamic environment.


The Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to operate as a visionary leader and drive change in a complex patient-centered, mission-driven, academic environment, providing leadership and oversight over the academic and clinical growth of a nationally recognized and clinically excellent and NIH-funded department (ranked #55 among surgical departments in 2021 by Blue Ridge).  Reporting to the Dean of the College of Medicine, the Chair will also play a strategic leadership role in the pursuit of NCI designation for the University of Cincinnati Cancer Center. Opening Spring 2023, a new, state-of-the-art surgical building will feature 8 operating rooms, pre/post anesthesia care units, and additional Emergency Room capacity.


The new Department Chair must be an inclusive, equitable leader and a talented surgeon whose passion for educational, clinical, and research missions energize the faculty, staff, and learners and provides a focal point for team-based collaboration across the Department and the College of Medicine. Within the Department, the Chair will promote a culture of institutional stewardship and transparency, dedication to recruitment, retention, and professional development of an excellent, diverse faculty -- and a commitment to improved business operations, efficient and effective use of resources, and a willingness to re-align resources with evolving strategies. In collaboration with University of Cincinnati leaders, the Chair will focus on growth and value-based care including highest quality, best care experience, equitable access, and efficiency.


The Ideal Candidate

Successful Chair candidates will be recognized as outstanding clinically active leaders in surgery and have an excellent track record in clinical care, research, and teaching within a nationally recognized surgical program. They will have demonstrated success as a leader either through Department, Center, or Institutional leadership. The new Chair will be a collaborative and visionary leader who understands how to drive change and lead an efficient and effective Surgery Department with the highest standards of clinical outcomes and research impact in a complex and dynamic environment. Current Board Certification in Surgery or related subspecialty is required, along with a national reputation, a track record of programmatic building, and the appropriate record of scholarship, teaching, and service to meet the requirements for Full Professor at the University of Cincinnati.


The Organization

The Department of Surgery is made up of 11 sections and is a leader within the College of Medicine, the UC Physicians practice plan, and the UC Health System. With a tradition of excellence and innovation in medical student education, the department is recognized for its strong GME training programs. The department excels in multiple areas including tertiary and quaternary cutting-edge clinical care -- while clinical, translational, and basic science research with intramural and extramural funding are hallmarks of the department with extensive laboratory and clinical infrastructure. The College of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati is Ranked #42 as a Best College by U.S. News & World Report. Additionally, the UC COM is a Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) institution and a top-40 medical school for research according to U.S. News and World Report.
