Summary

President, Western Region


Position: 

The President, Western Region is a key partner accountable for delivering on a bold five-year strategic plan (2021-2025) intended to grow Nuvance Health’s reach, impact, and value proposition. The President leads the development of the hospital's vision, mission, strategy and key initiatives to enhance the viability of the institution in response to the developing needs of the community, regulatory requirements. and accreditation standards. This executive will also be required to strategically partner with the Nuvance Health Executive Team, Community Leaders, Hospital Boards of Directors, and Regulators to ensure the delivery of excellent healthcare in the region. The position is responsible for developing, overseeing, and driving the operating strategy through the leader’s direct reports, partnership with other senior leader peers, and through effective and productive relationships with the medical staff. The executive serves as a critical member of the senior executive team, modeling collaboration, creative problem solving, and the Nuvance Health Reason for Being Values.


Organization: 

Nuvance Health, (Nuvance), an innovative, award-winning, non-profit health system, was formed in April 2019 through the merger of two leading health systems, Health Quest and Western Connecticut Health Network. “Nuvance”, derived from a combination of the words “new” and “advance,” reflects a mission to “continually progress and pursue impossible to enhance the health and well-bring of every person in the communities served.” The newly created health system was developed to provide communities across New York’s Hudson Valley and western Connecticut with more convenient, accessible, and affordable care. Nuvance Health is governed by a 17-member Board of Trustees. With seven hospitals, a total of 1,513 licensed beds, $2.6B in net revenue, more than 2,600 aligned physicians, and 14,000 employees, Nuvance Health serves more than 1.5 million residents across western Connecticut and the Hudson River Valley.


Nuvance Health recently transitioned to a regional model and the system has been divided into three regions: Western Region, Eastern Region, and Southern Region. Below is an overview of the entities within the Western Region.


Western Region Hospitals:

  • Vassar Brothers Medical Center (VBMC) is located in Poughkeepsie, NY. With nearly 2,200 employees, including 900 nurses, VBMC is one of the largest private employers in the area. The 365-bed, $717M net revenue, full service acute care tertiary teaching hospital has served New York’s Mid-Hudson Valley since 1887. A leading regional medical center, VBMC is a Level II Trauma center and is home to the area’s first and only cardiothoracic surgery program between Westchester and Albany and the only Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in the region for premature and critically ill infants. 
  • Northern Dutchess Hospital (NDH) is located in Rhinebeck, NY. NDH is an 84-bed, $162M net revenue, acute care, community hospital that provides medical and surgical services. 
  • Putnam Hospital (PH) is a 164-bed, $126M net revenue, acute care hospital offering medical, surgical, psychiatric, and 24-hour emergency services located in Carmel, NY. As the only hospital in Putnam County, Putnam Hospital has been serving the medical care needs of Putnam, northern Westchester and southern Dutchess counties since 1964. 


Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree, preferably an MBA or MHA, or MD. 
  • Minimum 15 to 20 years of progressively responsible healthcare leadership and executive-level experience within multi-facility and multi-dimensional healthcare environments of like size, scale, and complexity to Nuvance Health with excellent results. 
  • The successful candidate will currently be a President/Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, SVP/VP of Operations, or hold another senior executive-level position in a multi-hospital health system /matrixed environment with a regional and/or national reputation for excellence. 
  • Demonstrated change-management skills; leading within ambiguity and complexity; facilitation, collaboration. 
  • Demonstrated executive level track record of initiative, judgment, discretion, and decision making and being able to analyze situations accurately and taking effective action as needed. 
  • Demonstrated strategic and operational expertise with a focus on results.
