The Butte De Morale, only 6 miles northeast of Harvey links the city with its historic past, hearkening back to 1851 when a battle erupted between the Metis of Winnipeg, Canada and the high plains Sioux over bison hunting rights along both banks of the Sheyenne River leading to its headwaters located within today’s Lonetree Wildlife Management Area.

The ensuing battle occurred north and south of the Butte De morale thereby ensuring that numerous arrow heads, shafts, and other artifacts would be found by settler households who homesteaded north and east of Harvey later in the century.
