Summary

The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) is one of the nation's leading research-intensive academic health centers. Founded in 1891, UTMB was the country's first medical school and hospital under unified leadership. Today, it consists of a four-campus, $2.5 billion modern health care system with 3,200 students, 1,012 faculty, and schools of Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions, Public and Population Health as well as a Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

UTMB invites applications and nominations for the Chair, Department of Pediatrics, and has engaged AMN Healthcare to lead the national search for their new leader. This is an exciting opportunity for an extraordinary leader to take UTMB to the next level. After decades of leading the Department of Pediatrics, Dr. Joan Richardson will step down from her leadership role as Chair. Dr. Richardson has been a member of the UTMB faculty since 1974.

Consistent with the core values of the institution, the Professor and Chair, Department of Pediatrics is responsible for the quality of educational, scientific, and clinical programs within the department. The Professor and Chair is also responsible for the overall leadership and management of the department including the appropriate and optimal use of human, financial, space and other resources to successfully manage the clinical, educational and research missions of the department.

The new leader will inherit an exceptional foundation for advancing the group practice into one that is nationally top-ranked and recognized for leading-edge, exceptional clinical care. Working in a strong spirit of collaboration, the entire leadership team is demonstrating innovation, strong mission alignment, and unified ambition in achieving UTMB’s goals under the leadership of the Dean, Dr. Charles Mouton. 

The new leader must also be a competent and prudent steward of the Department, guiding it through what will almost certainly be an uncharted change in the healthcare and social environment. The Chair will promote a culture of stewardship and transparency, including commitment to improved business operations, and a willingness to re-align resources with evolving strategies. UTMB is deeply committed to ensuring that the care delivery is recognized among the best in the nation, and that the Department of Pediatrics is optimally aligned for its next leader to successfully build on that foundation.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will be a visionary and strategic leader. The candidate will have a proven record as a problem solver and can implement innovative solutions to contemporary challenges. The new Chair will have demonstrated leadership in clinical care, research, and/or administration and strong clinical expertise, within the field of Pediatrics.

Education/Certifications:

• MD or MD/Ph.D. (or equivalent) with a track record of professional leadership roles in pediatrics.
• Board certified specialty field and either licensed or eligible for medical licensure in Texas.

The Organization

The University of Texas Medical Branch established in 1891 as the nation’s first public medical school and hospital under unified leadership, has grown from one building, 23 students and 13 faculty members to a modern health science center with more than 70 major buildings, more than 3,800 students and more than 1,000 faculty. UTMB is now a major academic health sciences center of global influence, with medical, nursing, health professions and graduate biomedical schools; a world-renowned research enterprise; and a growing, comprehensive health system with hospitals on four campuses and a network of clinics. 

Today, UTMB has a $3.3 billion annual statewide economic impact, in terms of business volume, personal income and durable goods purchases. More than 46,000 jobs in Texas are directly or indirectly attributed to UTMB.

UTMB includes schools of Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions, Public and Population Health and Graduate Biomedical Sciences; four institutes for advanced study; a major medical library; a network of hospitals and clinics. UTMB offers a full range of primary and specialized medical care; and numerous research facilities and is part of the University of Texas System and a member of the Texas Medical Center.

The Region

Galveston is a coastal city located on the Galveston and Pelican Islands of Texas. The community consists of 208.3 square miles (539 km2) and has a population of approximately 50,000. It is located within Houston – The Woodlands – Sugar Land metropolitan area. The city is about 45 miles southeast of downtown Houston. The island is oriented generally northeast-southwest, with the Gulf of Mexico on the east and south, West Bay on the west, and Galveston Bay on the north. The island's main access point from the mainland is the Interstate Highway 45 causeway that crosses West Bay on the northeast side of the island. 

Galveston is known as the "Playground of the South". The city is a popular tourist destination which brings in approximately $808 million to the local economy and attracts 5.4 million visitors annually. The city's tourist attractions include the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, Galveston Schlitterbahn Waterpark, Moody Gardens botanical park, the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum, the Lone Star Flight Museum, Galveston Railroad Museum, a downtown neighborhood of historic buildings known as The Strand, many historical museums and mansions, and miles of beachfront from the East End's Porretto Beach, Stewart Beach to the West End pocket parks. The Strand plays host to a yearly Mardi Gras festival, Galveston Island Jazz & Blues Festival and a Victorian-themed Christmas festival called Dickens on the Strand (honoring the works of novelist Charles Dickens, especially A Christmas Carol) in early December.
