The Position 

  • The Nursing Director of Emergency Services is responsible for promoting and maintaining quality patient care in the Emergency Department consistent with the mission, vision, and organizational values of UP Health System – Portage.
  • The Nursing Director will oversee 13 RNs and work alongside 5 physicians and 1 NP. Supported by a nurse educator for the hospital with a background in Emergency nursing. The ED unit currently sees around 9,600 visits per year, with a goal of getting to 15,000.
  • Goals for the Director include focusing on the stabilization of the staff and cultural change. Building the relationship between staff and physicians. Creating and fostering an environment that encourages professional growth and collaboration.
  • Seeking a leader who can break down silos, focus on team building and nurturing, while also driving process improvement and accountability. Focusing on educating and mentoring newly hired nurses as well as building the department’s team. 
  • Candidates with a desire to grow within the organization are highly encouraged to apply. A minimum of five years’ experience as a leader in an Emergency Department is required.
  • BSN required; masters preferred.

  • UP Health System – Portage supports a multi-specialty medical community of over 40 physicians, over a dozen allied health professionals, and has been serving the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan since 1896.
  • The main campus is a 36-bed hospital, a verified chest pain center through the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC) and possesses the area’s only Open Bore MRI. The ED consists of 8 beds, 3 trauma bays, and 1 dedicated behavioral health room. 
  • UP Health System – Portage was home to the first Level III ACS verified trauma center and emergency department in the state.
