The Opportunity:

Bryan Health in Lincoln, Nebraska is seeking a dynamic health care executive for the role of Chief Operating Officer of Bryan Medical Center. This key, highly visible position will have responsibility for the growth and operational performance of the flagship and anchor medical center of Bryan Health. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer of Bryan Medical Center, this leader will be responsible for the growth and operational performance of the hospital.

The Position:

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Bryan Medical Center is accountable for operational results and growth in acute care operations through the planning, provisioning and allocation of functional resources necessary to carry out the day-to-day operations of Bryan Medical Center. These responsibilities are accomplished by establishing appropriate performance standards, qualifications and expectations and by serving as a member of the Bryan Medical Center Senior Management team and a key leader within Bryan Health System. This executive is responsible for directing, coordinating, evaluating and managing all operations ensuring the strategic growth, as well as the continued operational and financial success of Bryan Medical Center. As a member of the BMC Senior Management team, this executive is responsible for the proper planning and allocation of resources to include the preparation and monitoring of the annual operating budget and objectives consistent with the Bryan Health’s strategic plan.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Master’s degree in healthcare administration or related field required; Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives preferred. 
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in progressive leadership responsibilities within a hospital or health system environment, with proven success working in a matric management model.  
  • Demonstrated success in managing operations and quality improvement efforts, health care delivery, cost management initiatives, and health system development and management. 
  • Experience in analyzing a competitive health care environment and developing and implementing strategic recommendations for improved market share in multi-faculty, healthcare system environment. 
  • Senior-level experience with complex, multi-site health systems and/or with a single state, multi-market health delivery system, with experience working directly with physicians, boards, and governing bodies and joint venture partners.  
  • Market share growth experience is desirable. 
  • Prior experience working with a larger national system is preferred.

Bryan Health (formerly BryanLGH Health System) is a locally-owned and locally-governed not-for-profit healthcare organization located in Lincoln, Nebraska. The health system generates $1.1B+ in net revenue and includes Bryan Medical Center, Kearney Regional Medical Center, Grand Island Regional Medical Center, Crete Area Medical Center, Merrick Medical Center, Bryan Heart, Bryan Physician Network, Bryan Enterprises, Bryan Health Connect and the Bryan Foundation. The health system operates at a healthy margin and has bond ratings of A1 with Moody's and AA-with Fitch. The system has a leading and growing market position (70%) as a regional referral center.  

Bryan Medical Center is a 664-bed, nonprofit, Nebraska governed, healthcare organization serving patients from throughout Nebraska, as well as parts of Kansas, Iowa, South Dakota and other states in the region. Bryan Medical Center includes two acute care facilities. The Medical Center’s premier services include cardiology, neuroscience, orthopedics, vascular, trauma, and emergency centers, intensive care, women’s and children’s health, imaging, and mental health. They also offer inpatient rehabilitation, mobile diagnostics and treatment, gastroenterology, oncology, urology, nephrology, pulmonary and general medicine and surgery.  

Bryan Health employs approximately 100 physicians, but the majority (~85%) of the physicians in Lincoln remain independent, in contrast to the growing trend of physician employment across the country. Bryan Health has excellent relationships with independent providers—a differentiator for the system is supporting the independent practice of medicine in Nebraska—and its physician satisfaction scores exceed the 90th percentile. Bryan Health also has its own Accountable Care Organization (ACO) called Bryan Health Connect, which maintains the largest ACO presence in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Lincoln is known as the site of the University of Nebraska. As the state capital as well as the second-most populous city in Nebraska it is the economic and cultural anchor of a substantially larger metropolitan area in the southeastern part of the state.
