The Opportunity:
Vassar Brothers Medical Center, a member of Nuvance Health, is seeking a new Vice President, Patient Care Services & Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), due to the planned retirement of the incumbent. Reporting directly to the President of Vassar Brothers Medical Center & Regional President, the CNO provides administrative leadership and direction to the entire nursing enterprise at Vassar Brothers Medical Center (VBMC). VBMC seeks a talented and accomplished nursing executive with proven skills and leadership ability to work in partnership with the senior leadership team to strengthen VBMC’s performance in delivering high-quality care, service excellence, operational performance, and financial results. This is an exceptional opportunity for an innovative, dynamic, and highly motivated nursing administrator to continue to ensure New York’s Mid-Hudson Valley has access to high quality patient care.
The Position:
The CNO has full responsibility for overall planning, coordination, and delivery of patient care services at VBMC and its licensed ambulatory extension sites. In cooperation with and in support of the medical staff, the CNO will be expected to formulate and implement strategic and tactical plans to achieve and maintain excellence in patient care, operating results, and financial performance. The CNO will oversee more than 800 staff / 957 FTE’s across VBMC. The CNO will be expected to communicate a vision for nursing and patient care services at VBMC and will drive a culture of high performance and continuous improvement at VBMC to ensure the delivery of high quality, world-class healthcare services. Additionally, as a key member of the VBMC senior leadership team, the CNO is responsible for fulfilling the hospital’s mission to provide quality care by participating in strategic planning, resource allocation and evaluating/improving patient outcomes.
The CNO will participate in the development and execution of the vision/strategic plan for VBMC, ensuring that all healthcare services delivered are consistent with Nuvance Health System’s mission, vision, and values. The CNO will promote a positive image, enhance nursing, medical staff, and community relations, as well as deliver high quality patient care while coordinating with VBMC and Nuvance Health leadership teams to achieve an integrated and efficient healthcare delivery system. The CNO will serve as a highly visible leader and strong advocate for nursing professionals within the local community, with state and local governmental agencies, business, and healthcare professional organizations, as well as local and regional nursing schools.
The Ideal Candidate:
- Graduate of an approved RN program or other clinical specialty and a Master’s Degree in Nursing, Public Health Administration or Business is required.
- Licensed or eligible for licensure as a professional nurse in New York State.
- At least seven years of significant nursing leadership experience (ACNO or CNO) within a large, complex hospital environment.
- Preference for experience within a large, sophisticated integrated delivery system, preferably multi-institutional.
- Strong hands-on clinical experience with broad clinical knowledge.
- Proven track record of results in patient care services, nursing leadership, and management.
- Experience gained within a unionized staff environment is required.
- Experience with innovative nurse staffing models, as well as patient-centered care models is required.
- Experience with and leadership of performance improvement and patient satisfaction initiatives.
The Organization:
Vassar Brothers Medical Center (VBMC) is located in Poughkeepsie, NY and is one of the largest private employers in the area. The 365-bed, full service acute care tertiary teaching hospital has served New York’s Mid- Hudson Valley since 1887. A leading regional medical center, VBMC is a Level II Trauma center and is home to the area’s first and only cardiothoracic surgery program between Westchester and Albany and the only Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in the region for premature and critically ill infants. VBMC’s highly skilled physicians, surgeons, and specialists bring innovative procedures and services to VBMC, including robotic orthopedic surgery, liver and pancreatic surgery, interventional neuroradiology, surgical oncology, and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). VBMC opened a 752,000-square-foot, eight-level inpatient pavilion with 264 private medical/surgical patient rooms and 30 critical care rooms in January 2021 that helped solidify its place as the destination of choice for patients in the region. For FY 2022, VBMC had total net operating revenue of $759 million. In 2022 VBMC, discharged 21,960 patients and reported nearly 39,586 visits.
VBMC is a member of Nuvance Health, a seven-hospital integrated health care delivery system created on April 1, 2019, by the integration of Health Quest in the mid-Hudson valley and Western Connecticut Health Network in western Connecticut. VBMC is one of two Nuvance Health flagship facilities. Locally, VBMC is overseen by a 19-member Board of Trustees comprising dedicated business and civic leaders from the Hudson Valley region. The VBMC Board provides oversight in areas including quality, patient safety, and patient experience, for the benefit of the communities VBMC serves.

The Location:
City and country are close together in the mid-Hudson Valley. Located due north of New York City, the region is easily accessible to/from the city by car, or via train on Amtrak or Metro North. Poughkeepsie area residents can make a daytime or overnight trip to New York City and be back home in 90 minutes. The train ride from Grand Central to Poughkeepsie is one of the most picturesque train rides in the U.S. The region offers a wide variety of communities. East of the river, Poughkeepsie, Wappinger Falls and Fishkill offer urban/suburban amenities, with smaller rural communities such as Rhinebeck and Red Hook to the North. West of the river, diverse options among others include nearby Kingston, Saugerties to the north, and charming Woodstock.
