Position description: 

The Executive Medical Director of Surgical Services is accountable for developing fully integrated services that are clinically interconnected across the continuum of care and transitions of care by standard policies, procedures, metrics, reporting, and other necessary elements. The EMD will work with a diverse group of stakeholders, including system administrative and physician leaders, to expand, improve, and strengthen the Surgical Services operations, functions, programs, and integrated clinics/practice settings across the local hospital and health system.

The EMD is responsible for setting standards and expectations of quality, patient safety, and other important outcomes. The EMD also ensures that all clinical activities are compliant with regulatory and accreditation standards. Finally, the EMD exemplifies emotional maturity in his/her behavior and holds all service line members to the same standard.

The EMD is vital to the successful system coordination of peer review, credentialing, and education. The EMD will also lead the systemwide executive perioperative committee. These and other departmental functions facilitate and protect high standards of practice throughout many health system affiliates. Applying effective leadership in this domain requires close partnerships that cross departmental and service line boundaries such as partnerships with affiliate, operational, nursing, finance, and other leaders.


Qualifications/Experience:

  • Physician, M.D., D.O.
  • Licensed in NYS 
  • MBA, MHA preferred
  • Board Certified in a Surgical Specialty
  • 5 years of experience working as attending physician in clinical area of expertise 
  • 5 years of experience in program or departmental leadership 
  • Proven leadership, program development, and facilitation skills 
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering results in the clinical, operational, and financial aspects of Surgical Services and Programs
