The Opportunity

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, also known as UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA), is hiring the principal legal officer for the University, with overall responsibility for the vision and leadership of the University’s legal strategy. Reporting to the Sr. Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, as a valued member of the leadership team and the President’s Executive Committee, the Vice President Legal Affairs will provide legal advice and counsel to the President, Deans, Hospital Operating Board, leadership of the clinical practice plans, and other members of the University community on all significant legal matters. The Organization

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (dba: UTHSA San Antonio), one of six health institutions in The University of Texas System, is the major source of health professions education and life sciences research in South Texas and is a major center for patient care in South Texas. UTHSA San Antonio is a comprehensive academic health center with 3,250 students enrolled in five schools: the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the School of Dentistry, the School of Nursing, and the School of Health Professions. The University also offers cooperative programs in public health with UTHSA Houston and in pharmacy with The University of Texas at Austin. In addition, collaborations exist between The University of Texas at San Antonio through the San Antonio Life Sciences Institute and a biomedical engineering degree program. 

UT Health San Antonio intends to broaden its reach in clinical care by owning and operating a new inpatient hospital. In March 2021, UT Health San Antonio broke ground on the new $430 million UT Health San Antonio Multispecialty and Research Hospital ( This eight-story, 144-bed hospital will offer specialty care in cancer, orthopedics, urology, and neurosurgery surgery. Early phase clinical trials, including immunologic and cellular based therapies for cancer, will be housed and supported by the most innovative research conducted across South Texas. The building will be located on 12.2 acres in the South Texas Medical Center on land donated by the San Antonio Medical Foundation and connected by a sky bridge to the Mays Cancer Center. Construction is expected to be completed in the fall of 2024.

The Position

This individual will be responsible for collaborating on the legal aspects of the following areas: enterprise risk management, employment relations law, regulatory and compliance issues, commercial, government, and physician contracts, healthcare regulatory/transactions, medical risk management, intellectual property, research regulations, governance, mergers and acquisitions, and oversight and negotiation of outside counsel. The Vice President of Legal Affairs will also serve as a member of the President’s Executive Committee and will be responsible for leading and managing the Office of Legal Affairs (“OLA”).

The successful candidate will have at least 10 years of legal experience, with a solid and broad-based understanding of matters related to higher education, academic health centers and healthcare law. This individual will have extensive experience interacting with senior leadership teams with varied interests and areas of responsibility as well as an ability to exercise sound judgment on challenging and sophisticated legal issues and act with the highest ethics, integrity and professionalism. The right candidate will be forward-thinking, move expeditiously and proactively on numerous fronts, possess a world-class intellect, and have demonstrated collaborative leadership in their prior roles. Experience in higher education, academic health centers and/or healthcare is strongly preferred. Experience serving in a prominent leadership role and working effectively with various constituencies in a highly complex, matrixed environment is a clear advantage.
