Chair, Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Physical Rehabilitation


Reporting directly to the Dean of the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School (UMMS) and the CEO of UMass Memorial Health Care system, the new Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Physical Rehabilitation will serve as a member of the senior leadership of both the University of Massachusetts Medical School and UMass Memorial Health Care, Inc. The chair will be responsible for the vision and executive leadership, management, and stewardship of the department's mission related to patient care services, education, and research. The new leader will provide strategic vision for the planned growth and expansion of services. 


The Department of Orthopedics is highly regarded for its many attributes including robust outcomes research programs that pair with its collaborative basic and translational laboratories. Clinical programs include a Joint Replacement Center as well as multidisciplinary Musculoskeletal and Spine Centers.  


Successful candidates will be recognized as outstanding clinically active leaders in orthopedic surgery and will have an excellent track record in clinical care, academic scholarship, and teaching.  


Over the past decade UMMS has elevated its stature and become a major center for research. The institution now ranks in the top 15 public medical schools for NIH funding, and in 2021 the UMMS research enterprise received approximately $421 million in federal and private research grants and contracts.  


UMass Memorial Health (UMMH) is a $2.5 billion nonprofit integrated healthcare delivery system affiliated with UMMS, the multi-campus health system is comprised of a 779-bed academic medical center (UMass Memorial Medical Center), two community hospitals (163-bed UMass Memorial Health – HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital, and 79-bed UMass Memorial Health – Marlborough Hospital), a large physician multispecialty group practice, and numerous other related entities. The system has 1,700 physicians on its medical staff, 3,000 registered nurses, and 13,000 total employees.
