The Organization

The University is also home to Michigan Medicine, comprised of the Medical School, its clinical enterprise, the University of Michigan Health (UM-H) and Michigan Health Corp., the legal entity that allows the Academic Medical Center to enter into partnerships, affiliations, joint ventures, and other business activities. UM-H is composed of C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, the Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital, University Hospital, University of Michigan Health-West (formerly Metro Health), Frankel Cardiovascular Center, and the University of Michigan Medical Group (UMMG) which currently houses and supports more than 3,000 physicians and 140 clinics at 40 sites throughout Southeastern Michigan. There is also a new 264-bed hospital that is currently being built and scheduled to open in 2025 that will be called the Pavilion at UM-H. There are also multiple and important affiliations with MyMichigan Health, Trinity Health - Michigan, and Sparrow Health System to name several. UM-H currently consists of 1,315 licensed beds, 56,000+ discharges, and 3.0 million outpatient ambulatory visits, total net operating revenues of $5.2 billion and 19,906 FTEs (not including the medical school). Awards include U.S. News and World Report #11 ranking nationally and #1 in Michigan; Leap Frog “A” patient safety ranking; Becker’s Healthcare 150 Great Places to Work; and Nurse Magnet certification.


The Position

The University of Michigan Health (UM-H) Chief Operations Integration Officer (COIO) is responsible and accountable for all aspects of operations and integration across all entities of University of Michigan Health. The COIO ensures operational alignment and integration is seamless across all areas including Children & Women’s Hospital, University Hospital, Frankel Cardiovascular Center, Ambulatory Care, Ancillary Services, Pharmacy Operations, and operational oversight for external affiliations, including University of Michigan Health West, which is wholly owned by UM-H, but is not under the responsibility of the COIO. 


As an active member of the UM-H Enterprise Triad, the COIO supports and facilitates an interdisciplinary team approach and partners with the Chief Nursing Executive (CNE) and the Executive Director of the University of Michigan Medical Group (ED - UMMG) to drive synergies across the clinical operating segments and use an enterprise approach to address shared issues. The COIO provides direct leadership and management for all segments (Ambulatory Care, University Hospital & Frankel Cardiovascular Center, Children & Women’s Hospital), Ancillary Services, and Pharmacy Operations. All segment Chief Operating Officers (COOs) across UM-H report to the COIO except for University of Michigan Health West.


Qualifications


Education:

  • Undergraduate degree from a recognized and accredited institution
  • Master’s degree is required


Experience:

  • A minimum of 10 years of successful progressive healthcare/facility management experience in large, complex, multi-hospital health systems. Will consider experience in both non-academic and academic organizations.
  • A demonstrable record of significant career progression is preferred, having culminated in a senior management position as either a Chief Operating Officer, Senior Operations Officer, or Chief Executive Officer/Hospital President in a progressive, financially sound healthcare system.
  • Experience in leading academic-community integrated programs and services is preferred.
  • Experience in leading both inpatient and ambulatory operations.
  • Non-clinical or clinical administrative leader who possesses strong and deep financial and operations management experience within complex healthcare systems. 
  • Experience supporting the growth and management of clinical affiliate partnerships and joint ventures.
  • Experience in a unionized environment is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of healthcare policies and procedures.
