Chief Operating Officer for Hospital Planning and Operations

University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School

University of Texas at Austin Medical Center

Austin, TX

The Opportunity

A new position of Chief Operating Officer for Hospital Planning and Operations (COO) for the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School has been created and will be responsible for overseeing the Integrated Practice of the Future Facilities Project, a $1.5B facility investment. The incoming COO will lead the design, construction, activation, and on-going management for the UT Austin Dell Medical Center’s new Specialty Hospital. The COO will report Directly to Dr. Claudia Lucchinetti, Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs and Dean, Dell Medical School.

The UT Austin Dell Medical Center’s Specialty Hospital is projected to open in 2030 with 16 ORs and 250-beds, as well as shell space for an additional 14 ORs and 100-beds in anticipation for future growth. The hospital is envisioned to be a future-oriented, technology rich specialty hospital featuring an intelligent building design, innovative information and communication technology for robots, advanced building automation, RFID, indoor positioning systems, and more. The priority clinical specialties anticipated within the hospital are focused around neurological, heart and vascular, transplant, and complex musculoskeletal-spine, gastroenterological and metabolic disorders.

The Ideal Candidate

This is an exciting time for a forward-thinking, visionary, and operational academic medical center executive to do something truly unique: design, plan, manage the build, and subsequently operate the first university hospital owned and operated by UT Austin Dell Medical School, an innovative “hospital of the future”. The ideal candidate should possess 10 years or more of progressive hospital and ambulatory operational leadership experience, successful roles of progressive scope and scale within academic medical centers, and recent experience in leading large-scale healthcare and hospital facilities design, construction, and implementation.

The Organization

The University of Texas at Austin is a highly rated public research university and the flagship institution of the University of Texas System with more than 51,000 students. Named after the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, which pledged $50 million over ten years to the school, the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School opened to the inaugural class of 50 students in the summer of 2016 as the newest of 18 colleges and schools on the UT Austin campus. The announcement in August 2023 about the planned UT Austin Medical Center marks a major investment to advance UT Austin’s plan to lead in health and health care transformation while realizing its vision to be the world’s highest-impact public research university.

The City of Austin

The greater Austin region has experienced tremendous population growth over the last decade, increasing from 1.8 million people in 2017 to 2.2 million in 2023, according to the United Nations' population projections. By 2030, the population is expected to be more than 2.4 million. It is currently estimated that 25% of patients in greater Austin seek complex care outside of the region. Dell Medical School and UT Health Austin aim to serve those needs locally, providing high quality and accessible complex specialty care while ushering in a new era of healthcare by transforming care delivery models as we know them today.

Austin is the state capital of Texas and has a reputation for being open-minded, friendly, and innovative. The city has been consistently rated as a national creative center that draws talented people from across the world to its high quality of life, abundant resources, lively entertainment, and active lifestyle. Austin is bursting with an entrepreneurial spirit, a commitment to personal freedom and a passion for unearthing new discoveries.
