The Position

  • The Director of Nursing, Emergency Department (ED) will oversee Southern Maine Health Care’s Level III 29-bed ED at the Biddeford campus as well as the 10-bed ED located in Sanford, ME.  
  • The Director of Nursing, ED, will be responsible for the integration, facilitation, and coordination of administrative and clinical practice for the assigned nursing units in addition to developing unit goals and objectives with staff based on analysis of clinical and managerial processes to improve patient outcomes and create a culture of excellence.
  • This leader must be an active listener, taking note of staff concerns and engage in a transformational leadership style to bring forth necessary changes. This leader should have a genuine interest in the success of the hospital and a strong interest in the treatment of the population’s health.
  • The Director will impact team culture by increasing retention rates, providing additional education, analyzing throughput to ensure stabilization, and providing structure throughout the departments.
  • This leader will develop and implement the department’s operational plans, goals, budgets, and patient outcomes to ensure exceptional clinical care and all in alignment with hospital standards and regulatory requirements. 
  • Seeking an engaged and forward-thinking leader to create collaborative partnerships across the organization and drive key initiatives around staffing, employee development, productivity metrics, employee engagement, and operational efficiencies.


  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree is required; master’s degree is preferred. 
  • Active RN license is required. 
  • Minimum if five years nursing experience in addition to a minimum of three years of supervisory experience.
