The Opportunity

The MetroHealth System (MHS), a principal teaching hospital of the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine, seeks a dynamic and respected Board-Certified Physician leader as the Cancer Center Director & Physician Executive of the Cancer Care Service Line.

 

MetroHealth has engaged AMN Healthcare to lead a national search for a new leader. This is an unparalleled opportunity for an innovative executive with a desire to lead a prestigious clinical, educational, and research enterprise, and serve as an integral leader of MetroHealth during a period of tectonic transformative change across the healthcare industry. The new leader will be part of a mission-driven system that educates health professionals and scientists and provides leading-edge patient care, community service and research with global impact. In collaboration with the Vice President of Research and the Executive Vice President of the Physician Enterprise and Academic Affairs, the Cancer Center Director role will also oversee and grow research activity in Cancer Care. Currently the Cancer Center has $5M annual direct costs in NIH funding. Additionally, the Cancer Care Director will provide key leadership in MetroHealth’s continued collaboration with members of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center: University Hospitals. Case Western Reserve University, and the Cleveland Clinic. The Cancer Center Director must have a track record of oncology-related scholarship, who has received NCI and/or NIH grants, and has achieved national recognition for his/her scholarship. This individual should also be an outstanding leader and highly effective administrator with a distinguished background in the discipline of cancer. The Cancer Center Director must be respected for their operationally savvy, highly knowledgeable of cutting-edge science, and a visionary leader in the new age of cancer science.

 

Service line leadership is structured in a dyad model and, with the Service Line Administrator, both are responsible for the development, management, and operations of The Cancer Care Service Line. The Physician Executive of the Cancer Care Service Line leads the creation of strategy and identification, implementation, and execution of tactics resulting in service line development and growth, patient access, value, and quality throughout the MetroHealth System. 

 

MetroHealth is a national leader in the area of population heath and the social determinants of health. The system serves as a safety net hospital and treating vulnerable populations is central to the Cancer Care mission. The new Blood and Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy program seeks to “position the MetroHealth Cancer Center as the Midwest’s leader in Stem Cell Transplants for minority populations”. MetroHealth is now an institutional member of the National Center for Regenerative Medicine, a national leader in cellular manufacturing and regenerative medicine.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal Cancer Center Director and Cancer Service Line candidate will work collaboratively with other MHS leaders, leadership from the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center and leaders throughout the region to enhance the service line’s capability to deliver a full portfolio of services within the communities it serves in a patient-centric manner. He/She will also work collaboratively within and across institutional boundaries to grow MetroHealth’s cancer-related research portfolio with a focus on outcomes research, disparities research, and clinical trials in underserved populations.

 

Qualified candidates will be Board Certified in one of the above outlined clinical subspecialties and eligible for an Ohio license. They will have a distinguished record of clinical, research and leadership experience and skill in managing and carrying out initiatives in a matrix organizational structure environment. The successful applicant will demonstrate the ability to develop a synergistic program of surgical, radiation and medical oncology with a robust basic and clinical research program. The applicant must be qualified for a faculty appointment with CWRU School of Medicine at the rank of Professor. The successful candidate will be an experienced leader with at least 5 years of experience leading a clinical enterprise, including budget preparation and management. An advanced degree, MBA/MPH is preferred. Progressive management experience in multispecialty group practice environments, especially in academic health care is preferred. 

 

Education

  • MD, MD/PhD, DO, or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited residency program; a fellowship in a oncologic subspecialty is preferred but not required. 
  • An advanced degree in management (MBA, MPH, or MHA) is preferred but not required.
