Senior Vice President and System Chair, Primary Care

 

The Opportunity:

Nuvance Health (Nuvance), an innovative, award-winning, non-profit health system, is seeking a visionary, collaborative leader to serve as Senior Vice President and System Chair, Primary Care. This is an exceptional opportunity for an accomplished, forward-thinking, and effective physician executive to provide clinical and administrative oversight, as well as strategic and operational leadership to drive program and service growth for primary care across the system. There will also be the opportunity for an endowed chair which will support initiative and program development. The Position: 

Reporting directly to the Chief Physician Executive, the System Chair will be responsible for providing strategic direction and clinical leadership for all primary care services across Nuvance Health. The System Chair will have a dyad partnership with the Vice President, Primary Care Services and will collaborate with medical staff, as well as administrative and physician leaders across Nuvance Health to set the strategic vision for Primary Care. Recognizing that primary care is foundational to the success of the system, Nuvance seeks a candidate who brings thought leadership and deep knowledge of both the current challenges and future opportunities of primary care. The system chair should also possess a contemporary approach to leadership that builds teams, drives exceptional care, and positions Nuvance Health as the preferred destination for primary care, specialty care, as well as a desirable workplace for all its staff and physicians. The System Chair provides clinical and strategic leadership for all components of the Primary Care Service Line (PCSL) across Nuvance Health to ensure the highest standard of excellence in the care and safety of all patients. The System Chair also provides supervision and direction of the day-to-day operations of the PCSL. The System Chair will work with Nuvance Health, Nuvance Health Medical Practice CT, Inc. (“NHMP CT”), Nuvance Health Medical Practice, P.C. (“NHMP”) leadership, and their administrative dyad partner to set the strategic vision for the PCSL. The System Chair will establish performance targets for the areas of responsibility and manage the staff's performance in meeting them. The System Chair has direct responsibility for the PCSL.

 

Nuvance Health Primary Care offers an extensive range of primary care services across 27 locations within Nuvance Health’s seven hospital region throughout the Hudson Valley and Western Connecticut. Primary Care comprises more than 120 employed and affiliated clinicians collaborating in a subspecialized and highly multidisciplinary environment. All of Nuvance Health’s primary care locations are designated as Level-3 patient-centered medical homes (PCMH), the highest level awarded by the National Committee for Quality Assurance, one of the country’s leading quality improvement organizations. Nuvance Health primary care medical homes offer quality and safe care, with services that meet patients’ health care needs by using research-based methods for delivering primary care services and providing coordinated and patient centered care in the areas of Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatric Primary Care, and Advance Practice Providers.

 

The Ideal Candidate: 

  • M.D. or D.O. 
  • Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or other primary care specialty.
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure to practice medicine in Connecticut and New York. 
  • At least ten years of postgraduate clinical experience in primary care, gained in a community teaching hospital/health system or academic health system environment. 
  • Has established a high level of credibility among his/her peers as a physician leader. 
  • Five or more years of successful and progressive leadership experience in a Medical Director, Division/Section Chief, Chair, or other relevant role. 
  • Successful experience in clinical leadership and growth of primary care services. 
  • Experience working in a multi-hospital, integrated delivery system, with concomitant understanding of the complexities of managing across a growing system of care, is strongly preferred. 
  • Ability to successfully identify, recruit, mentor and develop diverse academic and non-academic physicians. 
  • Prior experience working with private (voluntary) medical staff members and employed faculty is a plus.

The Location:

Nuvance Health’s sites of care span the mid-Hudson River Valley region of New York State, as well as the cities and towns of western Connecticut, ranging from cosmopolitan Fairfield County in the south, to bucolic Litchfield County in the north. City and country are close together in these regions. Located north and northeast of New York City, the region is easily accessible to/from the city by car, or via train on Amtrak or commuter rail. Area residents can make a daytime or overnight trip to New York City and be back home in 90 minutes. The region offers a wide variety of communities, ranging from urban/suburban to charming small towns. The economic base is diverse and solid, as home to a well-trained workforce and an impressive array of companies, including Fortune 100 corporations.
