MD Anderson is seeking a visionary leader who understands how to effectively drive change in a complex mission-driven, academic environment as Chair for the Department of Laboratory Medicine within the Division of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
The Opportunity
The Chair, Laboratory Medicine is the academic, clinical, and administrative leader of the Department of Laboratory Medicine at MD Anderson. With the support and dedication of the new Division Head of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Donna Hansel, MD, PhD, the new Chair has the opportunity to build a nationally recognized program to sustain and continuously improve the current clinical and operational excellence of the Department in providing laboratory services to the clinicians and patients of MD Anderson at multiple locations.
The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate must be collaborative and able to lead an efficient and effective Laboratory Medicine Department with the highest standards of research impact in a complex and dynamic environment. They will be a nationally recognized physician with at least 7 years of academic experience in the practice of clinical pathology to include direct, progressive administrative duties which incorporate a high-volume multidisciplinary testing facility. The candidate must have successful leadership experience and a proven track record in clinical and/or laboratory research. Requirements include board certification in Clinical Pathology, and eligibility for full and unrestricted Texas medical licensure.
The Organization
The Department of Laboratory Medicine is one of four Departments within the Division of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and is the liaison clinical service for The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, providing a bridge between clinical care and cancer science. No other department touches as many programs, patients, and healthcare professionals as this Department. The Department comprises 11 clinical sections and 1 research section and performs more than 10,000,000 tests per year in multiple specialties. The clinical sections are CLIA certified, and CAP accredited. The Department manages eight distinct laboratories, in addition to a transplantation program and a first-in-the-nation blood transfusion surveillance and intervention unit, the Hemovigilance Unit. MD Anderson Cancer Center is one of the world’s most respected centers focused on cancer patient care, research, education and prevention. It is recognized as #1 in the nation for cancer care according to US News & World Report 2023-2024
