The Opportunity

The Louisiana State University (LSU) Health - Shreveport School of Medicine and Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport (OLHS) seek an Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director to lead an established, ACGME-accredited residency program.This is an exciting opportunity for an academic emergency medicine physician with a passion for resident education to lead a strong, well-supported residency program with a national reputation for providing trainees with excellent exposure to a high level of acuity, diverse pathology, and trauma. The training environment coupled with a strong, dedicated residency faculty contribute to first-time board exam pass rates consistently at or above the national average.


The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate must possess current ABEM or ABOEM certification with a minimum of three years of documented educational and/or administrative experience, three years of experience as core faculty within a residency program, and active involvement in scholarship. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative and inclusive leader who embraces educational innovation and demonstrates the ability to organize, delegate, mentor and develop both residents and faculty.  

The incoming Residency Program Director will be given 50% protected time for the administration of the program. This position reports to the Department Chair and Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education/DIO while providing oversight and leadership to 37 residents, four APDs, one Program Coordinator, and multiple research nurses. 


The Organization

LSU Health - Shreveport is home to the only school of medicine in northwest Louisiana and one of only four in the State of Louisiana. School of Medicine faculty and residents provide tertiary level care through a 50-50 joint venture partnership with Ochsner Health, the largest not-for-profit health system in the state of Louisiana and the Gulf South. Through this partnership, Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport (OLHS) has modernized existing inpatient facilities, expanded additional sites, improved patient access and case mix, increased volumes, and expanded medical student, residency, and fellowship slots. 

The OLHS Emergency Department currently includes 54 beds with 21 faculty attendings, 37 residents, and five APP’s servicing greater than 65,000 annual visits. It is uniquely situated as the region’s only ACS verified Level I Adult and Level II Pediatric trauma center, offers a comprehensive stroke program with thrombectomy certification, and regional burn center. The ED services a large patient population with a catchment area spanning the entire North Louisiana region, South Arkansas, and East Texas. 


The Community

Shreveport is the educational, commercial, and cultural center of the Ark-La-Tex region, where Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas meet. Tucked away in the pocket of northwest Louisiana that borders Texas, Shreveport and neighboring Bossier City are rich with Cajun character and Texan influences. Food, music, and entertainment are a way of life here.

Excellent education is available in Shreveport and Bossier City, with top-rated elementary, middle, and high schools – including both charter and magnet options. Caddo Parish Public School District is home to 12 National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence earning 15 awards as designated by the U.S. Department of Education while boasting several of the state’s top-performing schools. For families or students that prefer private education, there are many strong schools in the area including both parochial and secular options.
